  • Dr Harsh Vardhan's last few months have been dogged by several controversies
  • His characterisation of India's COVID-19 situation as in an 'endgame' just prior to the onset of the disastrous second wave has also been used as evidence that the doctor did not have his ears to the ground, or read the writing on the wall
  • Mandaviya's immediate concern then will likely be to ensure the seamless production and delivery of vaccines to states and to address the low rates of vaccine confidence in the country

As part of the central government's massive cabinet overhaul, India's Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, on Wednesday, tendered his resignation, paving the way for 49-year old Mansukh Mandaviya to take charge of one of the most important portfolios in the Union government. ,live-tennis-rankings

Prior to his appointment as India's new health minister, Mandaviya had spent the last six days doing the rounds at the facilities of India's key vaccine makers, the Serum Institute of India, Zydus Cadila and Bharat Biotech. ,basketball-australia-domestic-clearance-form

pharrell-williams-tennis-hu-hrvatska,While some may have thought the departure of Dr Harsh Vardhan from his post to have come as something of a surprise, to others it may have been expected. This constituted his second spell as Union health minister with the first lasting just seven months during the first term of the Modi government.

However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic saw Dr Harsh Vardhan charged with the overwhelming task of managing India's national response. Relative to other nations, the case and casualty figures from India's first wave of COVID-19 suggested that the country, via a series of measures like lockdowns and other surveillance and containment strategies, had fared well. But come January 2021, India's fortunes began to turn.

Dr Harsh Vardhan's last few months have been dogged by several controversies from the decision to grant the Bharat Biotech-made COVAXIN vaccine approval before the release of critical Phase III clinical trial data, to a failure to anticipate medical oxygen supplies during the second wave, and, perhaps, most importantly, an inability to drive India's vaccination programme forward at an adequate pace. ,handball-elementos-de-juego

It is against this backdrop that Mandaviya takes charge, and what lies immediately before him is a monumental brief to speed up India's vaccination drive. It has been nearly seven months since India began its COVID-19 vaccination programme yet as of July 6th, the country had only managed to fully inoculate under 5 per cent of its eligible population (according to data from Our World in Data). ,basketball-shorts-template-vector

brooke-roberts-soccer-highlights,The vaccination drive has been riddled with issues that have checked its progress but with the government's, albeit, belated decision to provide free vaccinations to all, it appears to finally be gathering pace.

volleyball-nations-league-points,According to reports, the number of doses administered in the last fortnight alone accounted for nearly a fifth of all jabs delivered so far. However, if India is indeed expected to achieve the central government's objective of vaccinating the entire country by the end of the year, a significantly higher rate of vaccination is warranted.

basketball-player-slang-old,Mandaviya's immediate concern then will likely be to ensure the seamless production and delivery of vaccines to states and to address the low rates of vaccine confidence in the country. It is by no means an easy task as Dr Harsh Vardhan himself had come to find but in view of the chaos the invisible virus has already caused and amid warnings of an imminent third wave, it amounts to a mission that the country can ill afford to fail.
