  • Shani Dev is the son of Surya Dev and Devi Chhaya
  • He is the embodiment of planet Saturn
  • Shani Jayanti is celebrated on the Amavasya Tithi of Jyeshtha Maas

Devotees observe the birth anniversary of Shani Dev (the son of Surya Dev and Devi Chhaya) or Shani Jayanti on the Amavasya (New Moon day) Tithi of Jyeshtha Maas (per the Purnimant calendar). And this significant day concurs with Vat Savitri Vrat celebrations in some of the North Indian states. Today is the Amavasya Tithi of Jyeshtha Maas, and devotees in several parts of the country shall pay ode to Shani Dev and Devi Savitri. Read on to know what you must do on Shani Jayanti and check out the Mantras to chant.

Shani Dev, who embodies the planet Saturn (Shani in Hindi), is hailed as the Lord of Justice. This is because he makes us pay for the sins committed by us during the present and the previous births. But, having said that, Shani also bestows wealth and fame. Furthermore, and interestingly, he is a devotee of Shri Krishna, and none other than Lord Shiva showers him with his blessings.

Many people experience the adverse effects of Shani in the form of Sadhe Saati or Dhaiya. Therefore, to ward off the harmful effects of Shani, read the Sunderkand.

Today, on the day of Shani Jayanti (which is also known as Shani Amavasya), donate til (sesame), read the Shani Chalisa and chant the following Shani Beej Mantra:
ॐ शं शनैचराय नमः
Om Sham Shaneicharaya namah.

One of the best ways to please Shani Dev is by seeking the blessings of Lord Hanuman. Hence, you may worship Lord Hanuman and read the Hanuman Chalisa to escape the wrath of Shani or lessen the malefic effects.

Offer the paste made with red sindoor mixed with chameli oil to Lord Hanuman and then offer oil to Shani Dev. Subsequently, worship the Peepal tree and do puja. Then, circumambulate the Peepal Tree seven times because it represents Shani Dev. And interestingly, even Shri Krishna has equated the Peepal tree with God in the Bhagavad Gita. Hence, the significance.

Today, you may also donate food to the needy in a temple. You may also donate black clothes, til laddoos and food. Make donations to a charity with utmost devotion. And last but not least, sit in front of the altar in your house and chant the following Mantra dedicated to Lord Krishna.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
OM Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

By doing so, you will be able to please Shani Dev, and he shall rid you of all your troubles.
