Palakkad: A woman who went missing from Ayalur village in Palakkad 11 years ago was recently found living just 500 metres away from her parent's home in a house with her lover. Interestingly, the lover lived with his parents, however, they were unaware of the woman's presence.

Sajitha left her home in February 2010 when she was 18 and walked into Alinchuvattil Rahman's house next door. They had kept their relationship hidden as they belonged to different religions.

The cops looked for Sajitha everywhere but in vain. They never suspected Rahman who was 24 then. "Nobody knew about their affair. In any elopement, both persons go missing," Nenmara Police Station House Officer Deepa Kumar A told The Indian Express.

Rahman's elder brother Basheer said that he had a separate room that was locked all the time. Rahman, a house painter, would not let anyone enter it. His parents didn't bother as Rahman was short-tempered. "Sometimes he behaved like a mentally deranged person, would turn violent if someone tried to get into his room. He would even take his food in to eat... During the day, as everyone was at work, Rahman and Sajitha would have the house to themselves," Basheer, who works as a truck driver, said.

Sajitha would even dry her washed clothes inside the room.

Rahman's family recently started looked a bride for him. Though he didn't object, he tried to change the topic.

Ayalur panchayat member Pushpakaran said Rahman was an introvert and they suspected he had mental issues. He added, "What we understand is that he had removed a few bars from his room’s window. There was no attached toilet and hence Sajitha would go out through the window at night, or when the parents were away."

Sajitha would pass the time in the room by watching a TV using earphones.

The villagers had forgotten Sajitha. "Everyone thought she might have eloped with someone to Tamil Nadu," Kumar said.

Three months ago, Sajitha left the house for some unknown reason. On the same day, Rahman quarrelled with his family and left home. Rahman's family had filed a missing complaint with the police.

On Tuesday, Basheer spotted Rahman by chance and found out that his brother and Sajitha were living together on rent in another village.

The couple was produced before a local court. Rahman told the court that he was afraid tha his family would not accept Sajitha. He didn’t explain why they decided on her staying locked in a room for 11 years.

The court allowed the couple to live together after Sajitha said she wanted to live with Rahman.
